You are not a pattern
This is not another label to carry. You may recognize parts of yourself in more than one response, and that does not make your result less relevant. These responses are not fixed categories.
Your result may give you a name for something you have felt many times but could not always recognize while it was happening. Before you do anything with it, watch this.

Your result is not a label
Watch before you continue
Best watched somewhere quiet, with sound on.
Three things worth carrying
Three ideas that change how the rest of this works.
This is not another label to carry. You may recognize parts of yourself in more than one response, and that does not make your result less relevant. These responses are not fixed categories.
Your result simply shows where your system may go when connection, belonging or emotional safety begins to feel uncertain, especially when the person or the relationship matters to you.
The useful part begins when you can notice the response a little earlier. Most people only catch it afterward, replaying the moment and wondering why they reacted that way. The earlier you notice it, the more choice you have while it is still beginning.
A small invitation
This is not homework, and there is nothing you need to get right. Bring to mind one recent, ordinary moment when you noticed yourself withdrawing, trying to regain control, saying yes too quickly, or making yourself useful. It does not need to be an intense moment.
As you remember it, become curious about two things.
Maybe you noticed tension, urgency, a change in your breathing, or a sense of disconnection. You do not need to find the perfect answer, or change the response. Simply notice what you can notice right now.
Where compassion replaces shame
Instead of “What is wrong with me?”
The closer we can come to the moment when the pattern begins, the more clearly we can understand what it expects will happen if it does not react.
The next step
Your result can help you recognize the pattern. A next step can be learning how to meet it while it is happening, before it completes the response for you. This is what we practise inside The Return.
